Canoe Objective

noatakThe Noatak River is a classic arctic voyage within the mountain wilderness of Gates of the Arctic National Park. The Noatak is one of the longest rivers of the North American National Wild and Scenic River system. We will aim to paddle over 360 miles from the Noatak headwaters to the Chukchi Sea. From the river mouth we will make a short sea passage to the Inuit settlement of Kotzebue. The Noatak is a great river to travel by canoe. It is relatively easy and meandering for the first few days, providing a good opportunity to brush up on paddling skills. Further downstream the current picks up and there is an opportunity to enjoy a series of Grade II Rapids.

The canoeing objective will be tough, particularly given the time scales. The weather in the Arctic can be unpredictable and it is likely that the group will have to paddle against strong headwinds and operate within a variety of weather conditions (including the baking heat and snow!).
